TWOFOLD SANCTIFICATION

(Adapted from Exodus 12:15-20; 2 Timothy 2:19; 1 Peter 1:16; Ephesians 2:8; Romans 5:20-21; 1 Corinthians 6:9-11)

The feast of unleavened bread is a powerful word picture from God that says, “Be holy even as I am holy.” Sanctification is twofold. We are sanctified by the Spirit of God and we sanctify ourselves as our reasonable service to God. Our righteousness without His righteousness is incomplete and as filthy rags. His righteousness without our righteousness would also be incomplete. Yes we are made righteous by grace through faith. And where sin abounds much more grace does abound. Yet Paul goes on to clarify this by asking, “Shall we sin that grace may abound, God forbid. Paul was saying, in so many words, “Don’t misunderstand me, when I say, Where sin abounds much more grace does abound.” I am not saying that God saves us in our sins, I am saying that grace abounds to cleanse us from our sin and to give us grace to overcome every temptation. The popular Christian cliché, “I am just a sinner saved by grace,” suggests that God saves us in our sins. The scriptures we have already quoted reveal that such a suggestion is not biblical and here is yet another scripture that confirms this.

Do you not know that the unrighteous
will not inherit the kingdom of God?

Do not be deceived.
Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers,

nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves,
nor covetous, nor drunkards,
nor revilers, nor extortioners
will inherit the kingdom of God.
And such were some of you.

But you were washed, but you were sanctified,
but you were justified

in the name of the Lord Jesus
and by the Spirit of our God.

Father, I know that I am not a sinner any more. I have been washed, sanctified and justified in the name of your son, Jesus and by Your spirit. I am made righteous by grace through faith and I commit myself unto you now as a servant unto what is good and right in Your sight.

Search For Leaven / Fellowship Begins

The 5^th day of“Pesach”

Search For Leaven

(Adapted from Exodus 12:15-20; 1 Corinthians 5:7-8)

During the feast of unleavened bread there is a tradition called “The search for leaven” in which the father will cut a piece of bread in twelve pieces and hide the pieces of leavened bread in different places throughout the house. All the lights will be turned off and everyone will look for the pieces with flash lights. While we are doing this we will ask God to shine His light on any leaven (sin) in our lives. When all 12 pieces are found, they will be placed in a little sack. The following evening of the Feast of Unleavened Bread we will build a little camp fire or light up the grill. We will gather together with the sack of leaven, bow our heads in quiet meditation concerning the leaven (sin) in our lives. And after this we will throw the leaven into the fire.

I do not believe that God was concerned about the leaven in the houses of the Israelites during the feast of unleavened bread. I do believe that God was concerned about the leaven in their hearts.

Father, shine your light on the leaven in my heart. I will confess my leaven to You and You are faithful to cleanse me from all kinds of leaven and bring me back into fellowship with You.

A NEW LUMP OF DOUGH / Unleavened

This devotion is for the 4^th day of “Pesach”

A NEW LUMP OF DOUGH

(Adapted from 1 Corinthians 5:7-8)

Purge out therefore the old leaven,
that you may be a new lump,

as you are unleavened.

For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:

Therefore let us keep the feast,

not with old leaven,

neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness;

but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

Leaven is a substance used to produce fermentation in dough. Fermentation is really the beginning of the process of rotting. Leaven in scripture is a type of sin. Sin begins a process of decay and puffs us up with pride.

As you read the whole fifth chapter of 1 Corinthians, you will see that Paul actually uses the term ‘puffed up.’ Because it is not possible to remove leaven from bread, Paul suggests that they become a new lump. The term lump indicates that he is suggesting that they start the process over with repentance. As you read this chapter, and also the seventh chapter of 2 Corinthians, you will see that they humbled themselves, took sin more seriously, came out of denial, and had godly sorrow that lead to repentance unto salvation.

He mentions two kinds of leaven - malice and wickedness. Many believers are good at identifying what is wicked and they would not involve themselves in any such thing. However, malice can slip in because of pride. A believer may not be guilty of a dark sin such as lying, stealing or adultery yet there could be malice under the disguise of unforgiveness. After we purge ourselves from wickedness, we should also purge ourselves of all malice and unforgiveness and become a new lump of unleavened dough.

Search me o God and know my thoughts. Search my heart for any wickedness or uncleanness that may be there. Cleanse me from every sin and set me free. I forgive everyone for every wrong, fully and completely even as You have forgiven me, fully and completely. I keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

APPLYING THE BLOOD

Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying,

In the tenth day of this month
they shall take to them
every man a lamb,

according to the house of their fathers,
a lamb for an house:

The very first Passover began with a special emphasis on the family unit. God did not command the Israelites to take a lamb for a village or a lamb for an individual. His command was that they take a lamb for a house.

I had a great head start in life because of parents who began their marriage under the lordship of Jesus Christ. My siblings and I went to church every Sunday morning and evening, every Wednesday evening and every revival service nearby. We attended Vacation Bible Schools every summer. Our parents also planned ahead and made sure they had the money for us to go to Christian youth camps every summer. I received Christ as my personal Lord and Savior at one of those summer camps and the blood was applied to my life. The blood that was applied that day at that camp is still on the door posts of my heart.

Rebecca And I began our marriage in March of 1997 also under the lordship of Jesus Christ. In July of 1998, the Lord entrusted us with a daughter. In similar fashion, we have made sure Hannah attends church, Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and Christian summer youth camps. In addition, we have put our faith on making sure Hannah is enrolled in a Christian school for most of her schooling. The most important thing is that she has received Christ as her personal Lord and Savior and it has been a direct result from decisions made in these areas.

All the pressures of the ungodly influences of this world are a factor in her life. However, the blood has been applied to our house and to her life personally. And the blood is the most powerful force in her world.

Father, we will not give up, yield or surrender to ungodly influences. As a family, we apply the blood of the Lamb to our door post. We fight the good fight of faith. We pledge our allegiance to the Lamb. As a family we are in this fight together. We overcome by the blood of the Lamb, just like they did on the first Passover. We have also read the back of the book and we know that “We Win!” So, we take courage today and receive all that is provided for us by the blood of Your Son, Jesus Christ.

A LAMB FOR A HOUSE

God spoke to Moses,

“Let every man take a lamb for a house,

Slay the lame, place the blood

On their upper and side door post’s

And when I see the blood, I will pass over you

OUR PASSOVER LAMB

(Adapted from John 18:1-14; 19:9, 29-31 / 1 Corinthians 5:7)

“Hail, King of the Jews!” His own people were screaming at Him and striking Him. They twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on His head. They threw a purple cloak around Him. “Crucify Him! Crucify Him!” Their shouts were loud and hateful.

It was the day of preparation for the Passover Feast. In their homes, the Jewish people should have been preparing a lamb to be eaten at their table, with their family. Little did they know that they were preparing a lamb, the Passover Lamb for all eternity. They would never be required to slay a lamb for a sacrifice again. Jesus was about to become their Passover Lamb.

Lord, why did Your own people reject You? I know that prophecy had to be carried out and fulfilled but Your very own people fulfilled it. It would have been different if you had been crucified through the hands of the enemy. Is that why you are truly their Passover Lamb?

My child, they did not know or understand the statement of Scripture that I must die and rise again from the dead. My death, My blood and My love covered all of their ignorance of these things. I was their Passover Lamb. I did many other things for them but these things are recorded in order that you may believe that I am the Anointed One, the Son of God. If you will believe and cleave to and trust this, I will be your Passover Lamb. I will make your house a home. I am the door to all provision for salvation and every need that you have. You are blessed and happy because you believe and trust this.

JESUS OUR PASSOVER LAMB

Devotion: Our Passover Lamb

Verse 1

The very first Passover Feast there was a lamb for a house

They took that little lamb into their home for four days

Slew the lamb and with hyssop,

Placed the blood on their upper and side posts

The very first Passover Feast

Families standing round their tables

While a lamb roasted in fire to be eaten in haste

Nothing can waste for this is the Lord’s Passover

THE ARRIVAL OF THE KING

(Adapted from John 12:12-19; Luke 28-40)

It is Passover. Jesus is going to Jerusalem to celebrate the feast. As He neared the city, the news of His arrival swept through the streets. The crowd of Passover visitors was eager and excited to see this man who had power to raise the dead. They wanted to touch the miracle man.

As they neared the city, Jesus said to two of His disciples, “Go into the village yonder and you will see a donkey’s colt tied. Loose it and bring it to me.”

Jesus rode into the city on the back of a donkey. The crowd was waiting. They threw palm branches and their garments down in front of the donkey giving the Messiah a grand welcome. They began to shout and rejoice loudly for all the mighty miracles and works of power that they had witnessed. “Hosanna!” “Blessed is He who comes in the Name of the Lord!” “Hail to the King of Israel!” “Hosanna in the highest!”

The Pharisees were also in the crowd. Several of the Jewish leaders pushed their way through shouting at the Messiah, “Rebuke your disciples! Get them under control!”

Jesus calmly looks down from the donkey’s colt into the eyes of the shouting Pharisee, “I tell you mister, if these people keep silent, the very stones will cry out!”

The very presence of the Messiah requires praise. It did then and it does now.

Lord, I don’t want the rocks to cry out my praise. I want to worship You with my life, with my thoughts, with the attitudes of my heart and with the words of my mouth. When I step in Your steps and walk in love, I am worshiping You.

Coming to Jerusalem again,
